Legalism – strict adherence, or the principle of strict adherence, to law or prescription, esp. to the letter rather than the spirit.
We have all met them, they have one or two verse of scripture that they have built their moral fabric off of and they have no idea the context nor do they care. It’s God’s word and all that matters is from the Capital letter to the period. Can I just say that’s stupid theology.
This week pastor Jeff gave us a great example of a verse that people like to throw around like its the 11th commandment. Check out the verse:
28 ” ‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.
This is a homerun verse right? It’s clear, it’s in the Bible, so let’s put it on the wall and call it day.
How about this one. This is a quote from Psalm 14:1:
“There is no God.”
But Daryl, your taking the Psalm 14 verse out of context. It’s talking about something a fool would say. To which I would respond, “Your right Bibleman, I am”. And so is the person who just looks at Leviticus 19:28 and doesn’t examine the context and spirit of the verse.
My point is this, read your Bible like a book of stories and instructions from a loving God instead of a list of rules from a dictator. You will be less stressed out and I won’t have to blow my top thinking about how you are teaching people that God is bad cop waiting for you to mess this thing up.
